Kickboxing is a great activity for getting into shape and provides many benefits such as improved flexibility, stamina, balance, coordination and increased confidence. It is also a superb cardio-vascular workout that works your body in a new way – ideal if you’re getting bored of the treadmill and exercise bike!

kickboxer In competitive kickboxing, there are different styles, each involving different techniques and allowing varying amounts of body contact. But you don’t have to compete to enjoy kickboxing’s benefits – many gyms and martial arts clubs will offer classes. Why not try one out?

What To Expect

Most kickboxing classes will start with a warm-up of about 10-15 minutes. A warm-up is recommended before any time of exercise, but it is especially important for activities like kickboxing where quick movements and stretching are involved. Warmer muscles and tendons are more flexible and so less likely to be injured.

The warm-up will usually consist of exercises such as jumping, skipping, push ups, jumping jacks as well as some gentle stretching.

After the warm-up comes the main workout session which usually involves combinations of punches, kicks, and knee and elbow strikes. Usually, part of the class will involve pairing up with a partner and learning combinations of attacking and defending techniques. Many classes also involve equipment such as punch bags and pads.

The end of most classes generally involves a period of cooling down and stretching. The stretching here is very beneficial because most exercise tends to shorten our muscles over time. Stretching at the end of a workout helps prevent this effect, and increased flexibility will help you get those kicks higher!
